Energy security

Coal seam gas provides more than 95% of gas used in Queensland. In fact, it supplies a third of the gas used in the eastern Australian domestic gas market.

Australia has more than enough gas for both domestic and export markets.

Australia has an estimated 203 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of coal seam gas resources (enough to power a city of 1 million people for more than 4000 years) and 391 TCF of total proven gas resources (including gas from sandstone and shale reservoirs). Once contingent resources are taken into account, the country has more than 800TCF of likely gas resources. More discoveries are considered likely.

In 2016,  Australia’s combined domestic and export gas production totalled 3.2 TCF.

Greater development of the country’s extensive coal seam gas reserves would greatly enhance energy security as gas is not only abundant, but also reliable and flexible.

Gas is unaffected by weather or the time of day, so it can provide constant power. It  can also be easily turned on and off to meet spikes in demand or to fill gaps in other forms of power production.
